Walter was identified by many as a pillar of strength, intelligence and loyalty, but most of all LOVE. Walter was known by some in the family as the “gentle giant”. He possessed an outward demeanor and stature that demanded respect, while having an inner heart of pure gold. Walter loved family, friends and ANYTHING that involved the great outdoors; he was a true master of his outdoor domain. On his days away from his profession, he was known to rise early in the morning; engaging in outdoor activities such as tending his chickens, hogs and gardens, or the selling of produce from those gardens and deer meat from his frequent hunting expeditions. His God given wisdom of the outdoors was frequently called upon from many in Pike County and surrounding areas. Walter was called upon to serve as President of the prestigious “Double Ought Buck” club located in Pike County, Alabama.
In addition to being a loving father, husband, honored elder of the family and avid outdoorsman, Walter also loved and served his country. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran who received numerous awards from the United States Government during his tour of duty to include: The Good Conduct Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Philippines Presidential Unit Citation and Rifle Marksman Badge. Walter’s proven leadership and loyalty advanced him through the ranks to a position of Lance Corporal within the United States Marine Corps.
Walter was called to be with the Lord on September 13, 2007 at the age of 56. Although he was not famous nor everyone’s favorite, he was a man of integrity whose word was his bond. Those characteristics alone have had unspeakable lasting effects. The mention of Walter’s name, to those who truly knew him, brings about a certain undeniable joy to their face.
